Georgetown with kids: one train ride, one town walk

A timed train ride or mine tour as the anchor, plus a park, the library and a short historic-district walk. High-country trails are a separate outing.

A Georgetown family day works best with one anchor: a train ride, a mine tour or a mountain hike, each an outing of its own. Pick one, allow the time it needs, and add a short downtown walk and a break.

Reserve the main activity first

The Georgetown Loop Railroad’s Devil’s Gate depot is the Georgetown boarding point. The ticket shows the depot, departure and any included experience. Seasonal and holiday trains are sold as separate products with their own availability, so book ahead.

For mining history, the Capital Prize Gold Mine runs supervised visitor tours; ask the operator about the route and whether it suits your children. A supervised tour is the way into a mine, not the old openings elsewhere in the hills.

Make the town walk a short one

The walking stops in Explore Georgetown give the layout, and a few blocks around Sixth Street are enough. The history guide gives the old buildings a simple theme; a firehouse, schoolhouse or museum facade makes an exterior stop when no tour is running.

City Park and Werlin Park are public-space breaks; each listing says what facilities it has.

Keep a library option

The John Tomay Memorial Library posts children’s programs, such as storytime and holiday events, through the county library district. Check the event’s own time, which is separate from the library’s opening hours, and whether the detail page asks for registration.

Separate the lake from the high country

The Georgetown Lake and Tom Bennhoff Trail is a different outing from driving Guanella Pass or starting toward Mount Bierstadt. Check the listing, the weather and the land manager’s information for the route. When the pass is snowy, a history day can stay in town.

In winter, read the October-to-May guide before leaving, and keep the reservation, food stop and outdoor break loose enough that an early finish is still a good day.
