Capital Prize Gold Mine Tours

Hour-long guided walk more than 1,000 feet into the Capital Prize, a working gold mine on Biddle Street, with rock breaking at the end. Adults $30, children 4–16 $20; reservations required outside July and August.

The Capital Prize is, its operator says, still an active gold mine, crushing ore for concentrates. The tour walks more than 1,000 feet into the adit, which runs 4,700 feet in all, on level ground under a ceiling generally above six feet; it takes about an hour, and visitors can then break ore and keep a piece smaller than a fist. The mine averages 49°F inside, so the operator recommends a light jacket and closed-toe shoes. Wheelchairs and strollers are not suitable because of the ore-cart rails. Rates for the one-hour tour are $30 for adults and $20 for children 4 to 16; children 3 and under are free, and groups of ten or more can call for a group rate.

From September to June tours run by reservation on the booking calendar, Mondays and Tuesdays may be restricted, and weather and driving conditions can affect availability; in July and August tours leave on the hour from 11 am to 3 pm, with walk-ins welcome but reservations encouraged. Its directions page says buses and RVs must follow its written route from exit 228 (11th Street across the bridge, then the dirt Main Street and 10½ Street) rather than a phone map.

Rates, hours and tour notes were read on the operator’s Rates/Hours page, and the address and phone on its home and directions pages, on 10 October 2026. Its blog feed carries posts dated from September to 10 October 2026, the evidence that it is operating.
