Before you go: Georgetown from October to May
What changes in Georgetown after the summer: the Loop's shorter diesel trains and closed Silver Plume station, the museums shut since 27 September, the gold mine by reservation, Guanella Pass gated after Thanksgiving, and the Town's rules for the lake ice. Where to check each before you drive up.

Georgetown is busiest in summer, and several of its seasons turn in the autumn. This is what changes from October, from the operators’ and agencies’ own pages as read on 10 October 2026, and where to check each before you set out. The Georgetown Trust’s visitor-center page puts the general advice plainly: the town is significantly cooler than Denver all year, the weather can change quickly and dramatically, the altitude affects some people (go up slowly, limit alcohol, drink water), and the sun is stronger, so bring sunscreen.
The roads
The Trust asks visitors to check COtrip in every season, because conditions change with weather and traffic; the I-70 Floyd Hill project, between west of Evergreen and eastern Idaho Springs, began construction in July 2023 and is expected to finish in late 2028. The Gateway Visitor Center at exit 228 has CDOT traffic monitors, with its restrooms open 6 am–10 pm daily.
Guanella Pass, County Road 381, closes at the summit after Thanksgiving and reopens on or about Memorial Day weekend, Clear Creek County says; in 2026 it opened early, on 16 April. In winter the county gates the road at the Naylor Lake intersection, 0.8 miles below the summit and the Bierstadt Trailhead, and keeps a parking lot at the gate for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and hiking toward the summit and Naylor and Silver Dollar lakes. It plows the first six miles, to the Cabin Creek hydroelectric plant, the first day after a snowfall and the rest of the way to the gate on the second or third day, after the county’s primary roads and neighborhoods. Within a quarter mile of the road, the Forest Service’s order (in force to the end of 2028) allows camping only in the Clear Lake and Guanella Pass campgrounds, bans fires, and limits parking to designated sites and the summit.
The Loop after the summer
The Georgetown Loop Railroad runs steam generally from Memorial Day weekend through early October and diesel the rest of the year, and from mid-October through early January the ride is about 55 minutes rather than an hour and a quarter. Its Silver Plume station is open only from late May through mid-October and is closed in spring and winter, so out of season the train boards at the Devil’s Gate Depot in Georgetown, 646 Loop Drive. The railroad’s own mine tours, reached only by train, run April through September. Collect printed tickets at the depot 30 minutes before departure; the railroad’s calendar has the dates and times.
Museums and the mine
Historic Georgetown, Inc. closed its two museums, the Hamill House on Argentine Street and the Alpine Hose No. 2 firefighting museum on 5th Street, for the season on Sunday 27 September, and its site gives no reopening date; its number is 303-569-2840. Capital Prize Gold Mine Tours runs all year, but from September to June only by reservation on its booking calendar: Mondays and Tuesdays may be restricted, tours can be withdrawn, and weather and driving conditions may affect them. Its summer schedule, tours on the hour from 11 am to 3 pm, is for July and August.
The lake and the trails in winter
The Town of Georgetown’s lake page says ice fishing on Georgetown Lake is popular in winter and at your own risk, and that ice driving is by Town permit only, in January and February, with the Our Gang four-wheeling club offering paid “fun days” under its permit. The Town’s news list carries a notice of 31 December 2025, “Residents Urged to Use Caution on Georgetown lake”, and an undated one headed “Georgetown Lake Ice Safety Reminders: Ice Fishing Prohibited Due to Added Safety Risks”; read the Town’s news page for the current rule before stepping onto the ice. The Town lists Werlin Park at 11th and Taos as its dog park and ice skating rink, without dates or hours.
For snowshoeing, the state’s trail explorer describes the Rutherford Trail, from 3rd Street up to Silver Dale, as a hiking and snowshoeing route, and Clear Creek County names Clear Lake, Silver Dale and Leavenworth Creek Road along the Guanella Pass road for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, besides the gate lot near the summit.
